Winter Aches And Pains

Hilary waiting for somebody to light the fireplace, she knows how to keep warm in Winter.

With the onset of winter, we always expect to see an influx of both dogs and cats suffering from arthritis. The cold wet weather often brings to a head a problem which has been lurking on the periphery for some time.

Remember that while we’re not able to “cure” arthritis, there are many things that we can do to ease your pet’s discomfort. These include antiinflammatory drugs, drugs that affect cartilage growth in the joint, acupuncture, weight reduction and exercise modification.

The things to look out for in your pet which might prompt you to come in for an assessment of a possible arthritic problem include limping, difficulty climbing stairs, trouble getting up from a resting position, being tired or slow after exercise, difficulty jumping up onto the couch or into the car, lack of interest in running around and playing, and becoming more withdrawn. We’re in the fortunate position that there’s a great deal we can do to help these animals, and often treatment will give them a whole new lease of life- so please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our vets if you think your pet is experiencing any of these problems.
