Fido’s Fun Fair: Boronia Park 2.9.2000

Blossum our Fido's Fast Fetch Winner

At 3.00am on Saturday the second of September the rain was tumbling down and there were a few Gladesville Vet staff awake, worried about how the weather was going to treat us for our annual involvement in the canine carnival that Fido’s Fun Day has become.

Well, the wind blew away all the clouds and almost demolished our marquee but the sun shone and all the fidos who attended appeared to enjoy themselves.

Eight of our staff attended over the day and enjoyed meeting many of our old and young patients in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

Our theme for the day was care of the senior pet and we offered free dental checks and the ability to talk over the latest in treatment of arthritis. We presented material on how to help an old dog learn new tricks with medication aimed at improving the circulation to the brain and so improve mental performance in our pets. Apparently these products are being investigated for use in dementia in humans.

Rosalie Matthews spent most of the day looking "down in the mouth" as a lot of our canine friends came along for their dental inspection.

A big hit again were the photo opportunities with the cartoon characters drawn by Barry Young. (Barry also created our Animal Olympians in the waiting room.) Heta, Tracey, Cheryl and Yasmine all displayed admirable patience in getting the owners and their pets adequately posed and took turns with the vets taking photos.

We had lots of owners and their pets feature in our rogues gallery in the waiting room. If anyone hasn’t yet picked up their free portrait just ask our receptionists.

Max Zuber and Susan Boquest ran the Fido’s Fast Fetch competition for the dog that could chase and return a tennis ball in the fastest time. Every dog was a winner in that they got to keep their ball. Blossom the overall winner won a year’s supply of Revolution heartworm prevention valued at over $200.00 provided courtesy of Pfizer. Agile Blossom won with a time of 5.44 seconds an overall winner by 2/100 of a second from Sarge, a large Doberman.

We had some dogs who really didn’t want to play the game at all and decided they were more interested in sniffing the surrounds rather than chasing the ball or once they got the ball they had no intention at all of ever retuning it to the start.

Speaking of winners Mark Hocking got to be the guest celebrity who judged the dog / owner look alike competition, the longest tail competition, the vocal talent quest, the oldest dog and several others. Just as well he has broad shoulders to bear the brunt of all those hostile looks from the losers when his decisions became known (just kidding).

Elisabeth, our practice manager, together with her husband Patrick engineered the whole day and supervised our ever-popular free raffle.

Max and Rosalie completed their efforts judging the Dog of the Day in the Grand Parade. There were a large number of entrants and it provided a fitting climax to a day both the dog’s and their owners seemed to thoroughly enjoy.

Many thanks to DAWG group from Hunters Hill Council for organising another very successful DOG DAY in the Park.
